With fieldwork in full swing and harvest almost upon us, we’re encouraging farmers and contractors to make sure their trailers are ‘match fit’ for the hard slog ahead.
Know your braking systems
Do you know the braking performance (braking efficiency) of your tractors and trailers? We are members of the Agricultural Engineers Association (AEA), which is a non-for-profit organisation supporting agricultural machinery manufacturers.
The AEA have published a guide to tractor and trailer braking. ‘Look Behind You’ which highlights the changes in legislation covering tractor and trailer braking systems. The guide is aimed at informing owners and operators of their responsibilities to maintain safety at all times.
Do your daily checks
Daily checks and regular maintenance of a trailer will help to reduce the potential of accidents and unnecessary breakdowns. We have produced a daily maintenance video to help you.
In our video, Chris Bailey walks around a Bailey trailer and highlights the daily checks that should be undertaken before taking a trailer onto the field or road. Chris provides step by step instructions on the greasing points of a trailer and what to look for when checking the ring hitch, hydraulic pipes, tyres, brakes and lights / reflectors.
Don’t overload your trailer
Overloading a trailer is dangerous. The manufacturer’s plate shows the unladen weight of the trailer and its maximum permitted gross weight. The load capacity of the trailer is the gross weight minus the unladen weight.
Always load by weight not volume. The maximum gross weight in the UK is 18290kg. The gross weight varies by model above 14 tonne payload.
‘Cropweigh’ is designed to provide operators with accurate load readings in the field or on site. Potential overloads are avoided by measuring the payload via heavy-duty hardened steel load sensors, which monitor degrees of body tilt to the left and right. An optional body inclinometer offers greater tipping safety on uneven ground. Read more about Cropweigh here ››
Refuel in the field over harvest
Our Standard and Agricultural fuel bowsers are the ideal way to keep things running smoothly this season. They feature a 2000 ltr removable fully bunded tank, with a 12v, 85 L/min pump positioned for easy access which is protected by a locking top panel. Read more about our Fuel Bowsers here ››
